Snapshot of a Typical Day

We adhere to a flexible daily rhythm over a strict schedule. Some days we spend more time on subjects in which the students seem to display special interest. We have some basic farm chores woven throughout each day (collecting eggs, changing out water for chickens and feeding them), as well as ample time spent immersed in nature and studying native plants.

  • Morning meeting (review days of the week, months of the year, today’s date, how everyone is feeling, reminder of safety rules)

  • Read-Aloud- The teacher reads a chapter from our current “read aloud” book

  • Written/ drawn narration (students will write or draw a scene from the chapter that was read)

  • Handwriting

  • Snack & play break

  • Reading/phonics (students have one-on-one lessons while the rest of the class plays close by)

  • Math (students have one-on-one or group lessons, depending on level and student’s learning style, while the rest of the class does reading/phonics individual work)

  • Lunch & play

  • Language Arts- a fairy tale or folk story is read to the group

  • History/Science- alternates each day (a living book is read to the class on the history/science topic we are studying)

  • Geography- students sketch the map we are reviewing in their notebooks

  • Clean-up & dismissal
